The Great Gatsby

Last week I read The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald. The problem with reading a well-known novel is that I’m overwhelmed by the critics. Its been acclaimed as one of the finest American novels of the 20th century, and has been studied by thousands. What can my opinion add to this?

Nevertheless, I shall venture my sid although was not a thorough reading - just once through.

It was an enjoyable novel. It speaks of a narrator who meets a well-to-do man, Gatsby, in the heady days of the 1920s in America. There were parties and everyone lived well. He describes how Gatsby met an unfortunate end, and how his wealth had left him empty - with no friends to bid him farewell.

How fleeting wealth can be! How unfaithfulness can ruin lives!

Is there more? Perhaps. And perhaps one day I shall return to pay it the proper attention that it deserves.
