The Question
I asked RD the Big Question tonight! And her answer was, “I’ll pray about it” - that was very wise.
I had to do it with less planning than I had hoped for. She leaves for London on Friday, so I wanted to ask her before that. And given our busy schedules (mostly my busy schedule - the early morning conferences doesn’t make me keen on going out on weeknights), it was tonight or never.
I reserved a table at the Equinox (the highest restaurant in Singapore at the top of the Swissotel) and bought her a book for her birthday. Inside was a photo of her favourite cat that I had printed, and the Question was penned behind the photo. It was a wonderful dinner - the view was inspiring and the ambience was perfect. The ring fell out of my pocket when we were admiring the view and she noticed it before I quickly swooped it up. It was nice that she ignored it though, so the surprise on her face was genuine.
I wasn’t in my best form because my back was aching. I was cleaning the floor this afternoon when one of the furniture proved a little too heavy to be shoved aside. What a terrible week for my body - first the hemorrhoids, then my back. But thankfully, my body survived the night (whether I’ll regret it tomorrow morning remains to be seen).
I’m expecting her to say yes, but I’m glad she’s taking the time to consider this seriously. She’s been very good by not asking me about it all these months, although I’m sure she must have wondered at times if I had long term plans for our relationship. Yes, she’s a gem!
