The Parable of Lazarus
Today is the 26th Ordinary Sunday of the year, and the Gospel tells us about the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, Luke 16:19-31.
Why did the rich man end up in Hades? Abraham’s words implied he was being punished not because of any sin he had committed but because he was comforted in his lifetime but Lazarus was not. What was wrong with being blessed with riches? It is uncomfortable teaching, especially to those who have been richly blessed.
It troubles me exactly because I enjoy (what I consider) a comfortable life. Although not rich, but I can think of many others who are worse off than I am. It is a stumbling block to me, a scandalon which reminds me that while there are others suffering, I have a duty to those around me who are worse off.
We don’t know what was expected of the rich man or why he didn’t do. What exactly did he miss that earned him his punishment? All we know is that he didn’t do enough. Perhaps that is the message - have we done enough for the poor?
