Upgraded Blog Engine

I’ve taken some time to upgrade the blog engine to WordPress 1.5. I’ve been very happy with this software, and I think the author, Matt Mullenweg, is an excellent chap for devoting so much time to enhancing this excellent software.

I customized the previous version with a three-pane template, but I haven’t had time to figure out how to make this work with the new template engine that WordPress 1.5 offers. Too bad - I’ll stick with the default template, which isn’t too bad.

The only bad news is that there’s some bad press going around recently that the author of WordPress had been engaged in a bit of search spamming. He had included hidden links inside the WordPress landing page to link to third party sites. The reason for doing so is that the WordPress home page is ranked very high (because of all the blogs linking to it), and any site that it links to will receive a higher rank in the eyes of the search engines. The wrong thing about this was that these links were hidden and the intent was to mislead the search engines to direct keyword searches to sites that had to pay for this privilege.

It’s nasty, and WordPress has stopped it now. I’ve taken off WordPress links from my site - they deserve a little smack on the hands for this incident.

In a surge of creativity, I added a header background image of Pigeon Point Lighthouse - much nicer now I think!
