San Francisco Pride 2005
Today, I took a trip to the city to witness one of it’s most colourful celebrations - the San Francisco Pride parade. The parade of (mostly) men and (some) women trooped down Market St and the streets were lined with onlookers and tourists. There were rainbow coloured flags and street parties everywhere I looked.
There was something unsettling about crowds cheering men dressed in garish costumes. Why do they do that? Women in leather jackets and crew cut do not attract as much attention as men in tights. Even in the crowds, I counted more same-sex couples than straight ones. Unbelievable!
This parade also cemented San Francisco’s reputation as the gay capital of the world. There were contingents of gays and lesbians from Asian countries - Malaysia (I couldn’t believe my eyes!), Vietnam, South Asia (India, Pakistan), and other countries.
Enough said!
