Donner Canyon Falls
Winter in California is wet! It rained nearly every day since I arrived last week, but today the skies cleared a little. I took the opportunity to visit the Donner Canyon Falls. Given the recent wet weather, I felt assured that the falls will be gushing with water.
Donner Canyon lies on the northern face of Mt Diablo State Park, on the East Bay. From Walnut Creek, Ygnacio Valley Road (how’s that for a name) leads to Clayton, a rustic town which boasts a Western facade. Here, Regency Drive leads to the start of Donner Canyon trail. This trail leads all the way to the summit of Mount Diablo.
I followed the trail along Donner Creek, a gentle flowing river that drains the slopes of Mt Diablo. The trail was broad and unfortunately coated with thick mud. Hoofprints indicated that this trail was well used, and I passed several trekkers along the way. About 2.5 miles along and 500 feet higher, the trail passes a series of small waterfalls about 10-20 feet high. All were filled with sparkling clear rushing water.
It was a nice 2-3 hour walk. I felt a little drained at the end of it - I was being punished for my Christmas indulgence.
